Plants are precious creatures that besides their roles in human nutrition, visual beauty, oxygen supply, and air purification, have a significant role in the treatment of diseases.

Using different kinds of herbs as medicine has been common scientifically from the distant past and Iranian well-known scientists such as Avicenna, Zakariya Razi, and Abu Rayhan Biruni had written quality books in the field of medicinal herbs. Among the most important of these books The Canon of Medicine by Avicenna can be mentioned.This book has been translated into different languages such as Latin, Arabic, English, French, and German.

Due to technological advancements, chemical medicine has replaced with herbal medicine over time. Although, today, the use of chemical drugs is more common, the side effects are unavoidable. Since human is always perfectionist, he is returning to use medicinal herbs in pharmacy industry.

Iran is one of the best places to grow a variety of plants due to its climate condition and geographical location. Therefore many pharmaceutical companies are purchaser of medicinal herbs of Iran. A considerable amount of these herbs is exported to different countries every year.

Saffron

Saffron, also called Red Gold, has different medicinal properties. More than 90 percent of this valuable highly priced spice in the world is produced in Iran. Saffron is rich in antioxidant substances that prevent or slow damage to cells caused by free radicals. It also prevents serious diseases such as cancer by boosting the immune system. The crocin in saffron is useful in improvement of insulin resistance. Moreover, it is rich in large amount of iron, magnesium, potassium, manganese, and vitamin C.
