Avicenna reconciled religion and philosophy: professor

Lebanese university professor Ali Karaki admired Avicenna’s efforts to reconcile religion and philosophy in the East on the birth anniversary of the great Iranian Muslim physician, mathematician, and philosopher.

He said that in his two masterpieces “The Book of Healing” and “The Book of Directives and Remarks”, Avicenna compiled the bases of philosophy in an unprecedented way.

Karaki stated that the main objective of the Iranian philosopher was to illustrate that there is a profound relationship between religion and philosophy, mysticism and wisdom, body and spirit, and God and existence.

He expressed the view that Avicenna was the first Iranian scholar to categorize the ego into three parts and to attempt to discover the relationship between the spirituality of the inner being and different organs of the body.

Karaki observed that the greatest achievement of Avicenna, which still attracts the attention of scientists, was that he confirmed that there is a deep relationship between the physiology of man’s body and his inner being and spirit and proved that the activities of the body and spirit reveal this relationship.

He said that the thoughts of Avicenna, including “The Book of Salvation” and “The Book of Healing”, are still studied by scholars and scientists in the Arab world and particularly in Lebanon.

Karaki noted that the “The Book of Healing” is regarded as an encyclopedia which covers various topics such as spirituality, logic, mathematics, music, and psychology, adding that academic and research centers pay more attention to the sections on psychology and spirituality.

He went on to say that professors at major Lebanese universities still give lectures and hold discussions on the psychological and medical sections of “The Book of Healing”.

In conclusion, Karaki said that Avicenna was one of the greatest Iranian and Islamic scientists and his thoughts still interest scholars in the East and the West to this day.
